I thoroughly enjoy scuba diving, so the obvious next step for me was to purchase an underwater metal detector: “the Fisher 1280X Aquanaut.” We did have a boat which made diving a lot easier. It’s also fun to search in and around dock spaces.
A few of my friends and I started a small part-time business that helped locate items people had lost in the water. Once, I tried to find a ring for a gentleman that his wife had made for him. I did finally manage to find it, though after 2 months of searching.
Another time, we were looking for a ladies wedding band. The search was difficult because the soil and sand was highly mineralized. However with a little more fine tuning and patience, we did find the ring.
A couple of times we were asked to find off-shore mooring anchors. Usually we had a description and a general location. What people forget is that time under water changes how many things look.
I did find my first piece of gold while diving. The marina owner told me about a customer that had lost a gold pen around the docks. I started looking as soon as I could. It’s difficult searching around docks because the legs are all steel, and it sets the metal detector off very easily. Any way, I kept up the search and finally I had a strong signal. However there wasn't anything on the bottom. What had happened was the pen was tangled in some weeds. So that's how I came by my first gold piece!

The Fisher 1280X Aquanaut detector is easy to handle on land, but harder in the water. Not enough weight on the coil. With no dept meter, its hard to determine how deep to dig. With no discrimination, you have to dig all signals. Battery case, in time, will leak.
Having some sort of ring attached to battery housing would help to hook on to your belt loop and not have to lay down when recovering target when searching in the water. Detector is light enough to search for a long time. I think the cord is too long,as with all metal detectors and is cumbersome when wrapping around the rods.
