The Minelab Explorer SE series of metal detectors gave new life to my treasure hunting experiences. Its performance in the field is without question, the best I have used.
The first couple of adventures using the Explorer were too well-hunted, played out locations that everyone was considering unworthy of your time. After making some outstanding finds in areas, I personally had hunted multiple times before with other machines. I immediately went home and pulled out my list of every site I had ever been to. I started a checklist to ensure I go back to every one of them. Sure enough, I have been able to find coins at every site.
My favorite was an old farm site where I had pulled many large cents. There was a large oak tree I had to pass going to and from the site. Whenever I hunted around that tree, I always had deep iron signals, so I kept walking. The first time I went around that tree with the Explorer, Bang! I had a high-tone coin signal at depth! Sure enough, an 1824 Large Cent was recovered!
The Explorer has the best discrimination at depth of any machine I ever used. And I am amazed that I can actually find coins that are off the depth scale!
That is why I recently upgraded to the Explorer SE. I don't want to lose any of the capability I had. I only want to improve upon it. And the SE certainly does that. With a faster processor, refined iron mask, improved pinpoint function and the new audio tuning parameters, I am already having a great 2008!
Thank you, Minelab!

I would just like to say that i'm from the U.K. I have been detecting for 40 years now my 1st machine was a C-Scope 990 TR and my next was a Fisher 1265, I found lots of interesting things, old british coins, war items, jewellery and modern money, but loads of junk came with these finds. I stuck with the Fisher 1265 until the early 1990's when I changed to Whites detectors these machines had better discrimination and depth and my finds doubled, I was very pleased and the money I had spent was soon retrieved and I was into profit in 3 years of buying these detectors (one machine for beach and one for inland).
Then came the big change to Minelab and my 1st machine was:-
1. MINELAB SOVERIEGN XS2APRO
2. MINELAB EXPLORER 1
3. MINELAB ELITE
4. MINELAB EXPLORER SE (CHRISTENED STARSHIP ENTERPRISE, GET IT SE)
As you can see once I bought my 1st Minelab machine there was no turning back each machine has got better and better, the Explorer SE is the best yet its best features are:-
1. Weight much lighter than original Explorer 1 was.
3. Depth, twice as deep as other detectors with a SEF coil on (and lighter)
4. Distinguishing between junk and good finds, the money and jewellery.
5. Price much cheaper than before for a detector of this quality.
6. Excellent all round detector for beach and inland.
This is the easiest machine to use, switch on, tweak the settings, press detect and your away, when I say tweak the settings I mean go into menu change your sounds to FERROUS, amend your gain, have your threshold tone so its just audible and read your manual. I would recomend this machine to anyone wanting to take up metal detecting it cost me $1300.00 to buy (that includes SEF COIL)
In return I have found over $1700.00 in cash, sold the 15 gold wedding rings found for $950.00 (I have kept the one's with diamonds in) and have found over 200 ROMAN coins, 30 Hammerred coins (medieval coins) and many ancient artifacts as well (trades weights, Roman brooches, spindle whirls etc etc).
All this and more found with the Exoplorer SE in 3 years, WOW.
My advice is buy this machine and do the following things:
1. Read your manual 1st.
2. Research where you intend to detect, read about the history and what went on.
3. Go to the beach to test your detector out or to the park.
4. Remember set your sounds to FERROUS.
5. Ask if you need help.
6. Do not give up if you don't find much in your 1st 3 or 4 outings keep at it, keep the faith (as Jon Bon Jovi says).
7. Finally Live long and prosper V.
All the best

Minelab SE without a doubt is the best metal detector I have ever used. I do a lot of coin hunting, civil war hunting, and beach hunting. It is a very deep-seeking machine, I have found Civil War minnie balls at the Battle of Dry Wood Creek, in Missouri, 10 and 12 inches deep, in the normal discrimination mode. Other machines of my friends couldn’t get a reading on them.
I found coins on the beach in New Hampshire and Maine 12 to 16 inches in the wet salty sand. This machine does not have to be ground balanced, you can search from the dry sand to the wet salty sand and on into the water with no false signals and no loss of depth.
The SE is easy to adjust and setup different programs of detection, pinpointing is easy to perform with a little practice. The weight of the SE is not a problem and different coils are available that give the machine more versatility. With the SE, you can search under or near electric lines with no interference, just push the noise control push-pad with the coil resting on the ground, this should be done once in a while as the areas change as you go along searching. Our Club had the pleasure of searching the Newtonia, Missouri Battle Field area, and many of the yards of the homes of the town. Several bullets were found also buttons, spurs, and other civil war targets. I found a brass muscle loading Derringer called cap and ball, the nipple was almost gone. The hammer and trigger were rusted away. The Pistol is in the museum along with the other things that was found encased in a glass case which was made by one of the members.

I have had the new machine for about six months and it’s hard to believe that I have become so impressed with it. I used to use a Fisher and have been totally amazed with the Explorer SE Pro. It has got to be one of the best machines made and I highly recommend it to both the first timers as well as those who have been detecting for a while. I have found as much in the last few months as I had found in the past year using other types of machines.
I highly recommend this machine and with a bit of time and experience I'm sure that you will feel this positive about the Explore SE Pro and its ability to find treasures. This machine is user friendly and it is also easy to install programs for various areas that may offer other things to hunt such as gold, relics, and artifacts which you may want to hunt.
I do it all so I have several different programs preset so that when I travel to different sites all I have to do is just hit the program key and I am ready to hunt. So for with this machine I have found many gold rings, lots of coins both old such as 1900 Indian head penny, 20’s 30’s and 40’s dimes ,quarters and sliver dollars. It has been quite a ride and I'm just getting started. I would like to take a minute to remind all of you that it only takes a minute to get permission to hunt the areas that you want and it makes a great example to people to think that you care about their feelings. Most people will let you so just take that minute and ask. It looks good for us.
Well I hope that you’ll have a great hunt and that you find lots of treasures and that you give this machine a try. I'm sure that you will agree that it’s all I have said and more.
