If you want to buy your kid a metal detector or just want to dabble in this hobby without putting out a lot of cash, I would start with this model. It has auto ground balance and gives you control over discrimination which is good. We hunted with it in a yard heavily populated with nails and were able to screen out the nails and keep hunting.
