I currently own the Whites beach and water model XLT, plus I have a Nautilus DMC IIB as my backup. The Nautilus has a serial number 00010, assuming that I own the 10th one they built. I have used many detectors in the past, including the Surf Master beach type detector and the first Eagle computer model.
I just cannot remember the model number of my first analog Whites. I have found a significant amount of Civil War relics with all my machines. I was published in the NSTCW magazine, and just recently sold my collection to Virginia Relics. I am doing some research on Civil War sites in Iowa, and plan to get out again this year.
I bought a Whites Eagle when they first came out. I found so many Plates with it, like my Nautilus. We used to water hunt at Aqua Po Beach in Stafford County, Virginia. Aqua Po Beach is where I found so many buttons, bullets, and even gold coins.
The Whites’ machines are easy to tune, because they are ground balanced and fairly automatic while hunting. The only problem was the ground balancing (especially in damp weather), but with little practice I soon overcame that hurdle.

I have been metal detecting for 39 years now. I have used just about every type of detector from home made to the top of the line Whites DFX. I have owned six different Whites detectors, and the best by far was the Whites Eagle spectrum, that I still own.
I have found more money with that detector than any other. I purchased a 1936 Chevy master sedan with the glad money I found with the spectrum at a cost of $1200.00. That's a lot of change. The depth of the spectrum as been remarkable too. I have found pennies ten and eleven inches deep. My oldest coin to date is a 1678 Scottish Bawbee.
The silver coins are too many to count. I have a box full of rings, and other jewelry. Most of the civil war relics I have found has been with the spectrum, including a nice CS tongue portion of a buckle. I use the factory 9 1/2" coil for most of the detecting, and have wore out three coil covers. I have purchased several different sizes of coils for the spectrum to include a 3 1/2", 6", 8", and a 15". All do very well. The stability of the machine has been superb.
It runs steady in any type of soil. I don't think I will ever get rid of the spectrum, and hope that Whites Electronics will be able to repair it if anything should go bad. I will say for certain, the spectrum has been the best detector from Whites I have ever used, thank you Whites Electronics for a wonderful product.

In the short time I have been using my White's Spectrum XLT, I have been performing at a three-star level with a five-star metal detector. And as I continue to detect, my ability continues to improve -- my soon-to-be five-star skills, matched with my five-star XLT, will surely give me many five-star detecting days.
Straight from the box, I have been more than impressed with the XLT, having been able to quickly turn it on and start pulling coins and World War II artifacts from Italian farm fields.
What most impresses me about the XLT is its ease of use and the ability to tailor its settings based on my detecting needs. This has come in handy while hunting hard, sun-baked soil in Italy; soft, muddy fields in England, and rocky saltwater beaches in Japan.
The XLT is also spectacular in its ability to accurately pinpoint items and give me a clear idea of the target's depth. This pinpointing accuracy brought about another unexpected benefit - I did not have to use my handheld pinpointer as often, which increased the time I was actually detecting.
While my XLT is designed for use in America - its search screen is formatted to identify specific U.S. coin denominations - I found that after a short while I was able to generally distinguish commonly-found Italian coins based on the VDI indicator reading. It is the XLT's ability to accurately represent targets that makes this such a powerful machine.
I am not alone in my admiration for the detector's performance: there are dozens of customized programs available from other XLT users on the Internet. And these customized programs have allowed me to realize that I have a lot to learn about the XLT.
But, as I grow as a detecting hobbyist, I know that my detector will be able meet my needs and adapt with me. The White's Spectrum XLT is truly a five-star detector for five-star detecting days.
